You're the prowd owner of an account on Deep Thought, the core shell server for Milliways Internet. So, you've got an account, but how does it work? What do you do with it? Hold onto your hats kids, 'cause we're going to answer all those questions and more in the next few pages.

How does it work? It's quite simple, really. You SSH to deep-thought.milliways.net (71.244.50.116) and enter your username and password when prompted.

Why SSH? Because telnet is a Bad Thing(tm). If you'd like more information on this, email root and ask. We can point you to several references.

What do you do with a shell account? The short answer is: anything you want, that doesn't involve annoying the owner of the box. The long answer is infinitely more complex, and is left as an exercise for the reader. Your guiding tenet should be to ask if you're ever in doubt. We're really carefree souls, and thus don't enjoy policing our user's activities. Consequently, we expect you to behave appropriately. Remember that having a shell here is a privilege, not a right. With privilege comes responsibility. Use it wisely...

What about the fun stuff, like mail, web space, and things like that? Okay, enough hellfire and brimstone, on to the good stuff. Information about mail can be found here. Your web stuff will be available at http://milliways.net/~username/. Anything placed in your public_html directory will show up here. If you're strongly adverse to tildes and want name or ip based virtual hosting, mail root and ask. The worst thing we can do is say "no". (Okay, so we could delete your account, hunt you down, and sell you into slavery in a third-world country where you'll end up starving to death while appeasing the whims of brutal and masochistic bastard, but we probably won't.)

You should probably read our Terms and Conditions while you're at it. Anything else, email root and ask. It makes us feel useful...
